How Much Do Plumbers Charge to Install a Garbage Disposal in Dacula?

How Much Do Plumbers Charge to Install a Garbage Disposal in Dacula?

On average, plumbers charge about $140 to $275 to install a garbage disposal when the mount, drain, and power are already under the sink. With the unit included, most replacements land between $200 and $625. Yet the full range for what sounds like one job runs from about $150 to $950, more than six times the money. Two causes of that gap show up on the quote. The third never does, and it matters more in Gwinnett County than in most of the country.

Garbage Disposal Installation Cost: Labor Only vs. Unit Included

Most of the confusion online comes from one mix-up. Somebody compares a price for the installation alone against a price that includes the unit, then decides one of the two is a rip-off. Keep them apart.

Swap an existing disposal, unit supplied

About $200 to $625

Up to about $950, plus any new wiring

The unit is the other variable. A continuous feed disposal unit runs about $80 to $200, and a batch feed model about $100 to $350. Motor size moves it further. A 1/3 to 1/2 HP unit runs about $50 to $225, a 3/4 HP unit about $120 to $310, and a 1 HP unit $200 to $400.

These figures are rounded from 2026 national pricing data published by the home services sites Thumbtack and Angi. They show the national average cost to install a unit. They aren't our rates and they aren't a quote. The number that counts is the one written for your kitchen.

So what moves a job from the bottom of that range to the top?

Garbage Disposal Replacement Costs Less Than a First-Time Install

The biggest factor is whether there's a disposal under your sink right now.

If there is, everything the new unit needs is already there. The old unit comes off and the new one goes on. Which is why a swap can cost as little as half of what a first-time installation does.

If you want to install a new garbage disposal in a sink that's never had one, the job changes. The sink drain has to be reconfigured so the unit sits between the basin and the trap. The unit needs power inside the cabinet and a switch to run it. If there's no outlet down there, that part is work for a licensed electrician, and depending on local code it can mean a dedicated circuit.

Plumbing and electrical on one ticket.

It can also bring a permit into the picture. The City of Dacula requires permits for plumbing and electrical modifications, though some work is exempt, and it only issues them inside city limits. A home with a Dacula mailing address outside those limits answers to a different office, usually Gwinnett County. Ask which one applies before the work starts.

Even a simple swap has more line items than most people expect.

What Is Included in a Garbage Disposal Installation Quote?

Depending on your kitchen, expect some or all of these on the quote:

  • The service call or trip charge
  • Removing the old garbage disposal and hauling it off
  • A new sink flange, set in plumber's putty
  • The discharge tube and its connection to the trap
  • The dishwasher drain hookup
  • A power cord kit, if the unit ships without one
  • Any additional plumbing work if the trap no longer lines up

Two of those catch people out. The first is the dishwasher hookup. A new unit ships with a plug sealed inside the inlet. If your machine drains through the disposal and nobody knocks that plug out, it won't drain on its first cycle.

The second is removal. Most installers fold taking out the old unit into the estimate. But when the old one is corroded and refuses to come off the mount, that can add $50 to $100 in labor costs.

Both are part of the real work, and both belong on the quote.

Should You Buy Your Own Garbage Disposal?

You can buy the new disposal yourself and pay for installation only, or have your installer supply it and roll it into the overall cost.

Buying your own makes you responsible for getting the right one, power cord included. The type of garbage disposal matters too. A continuous feed garbage disposal usually runs off a wall switch, while batch feed disposals only run with a stopper locked into the drain. Batch feed units are safer to use but generally aren't recommended for households that produce a lot of food waste.

So before you buy, ask one question. If the unit turns out to be defective, who pays for the second trip to install a new one? Manufacturer warranties vary by make and model, and an installer's coverage on labor is a separate thing. Get both answers before the unit goes in.

Is Your Garbage Disposal Quote a Fair Price?

Compare scope, not totals.

A low number might be a straight swap using your unit, with nothing else included. A high number might cover a 3/4 horsepower stainless steel disposal and a rebuilt trap. Those are two different jobs, and the totals should be different. Ask what happens to a low or flat-rate price if your sink needs more, because the cheapest number on paper can end up costing more once the extras appear.

You should be able to see inside a fair price before the work starts. If a quote won't break out the unit, the labor, and the parts, ask for one that does.

Millennial Plumbing & Tankless writes estimates that way, itemized and before any work begins. To get one for your sink, call 470-727-6292.

There's one more cost question, and for a lot of homes around Dacula it should come first.

Can You Use a Garbage Disposal on Septic in Dacula?

An estimated 30 percent of Gwinnett County is on septic, one of the highest concentrations in the country. Both claims come from the county's Department of Water Resources, citing the Georgia Department of Public Health.

The county's septic maintenance guidance is blunt. The more solids go down the drain, the faster the tank fills, and its advice is to avoid using a garbage disposal on a septic system. Its homeowner guide says to check with Gwinnett County Environmental Health that your system can handle one.

A 1,000-gallon tank serving a household of four needs pumping about every 2.6 years, by that guide's own table. Sooner with a disposal.

You can find out which side you're on in a minute. Pull up your Gwinnett County water bill and find the line labeled "Sewer Amount Charged." If it shows $0.00, you're very likely on septic. If the bill doesn't settle it, the county's GIS Data Browser and Environmental Health both hold septic records.

That doesn't rule a disposal out. It means talking about your tank and your pumping schedule before you buy. A disposal that's cheap to install is no bargain if it has you pumping the tank more often. That's the cost no quote will ever show.

Do You Need a Plumber to Install a Garbage Disposal?

For a like-for-like swap on a sink with no leaks, plenty of people call a handyman or do it themselves. The risk with DIY is the small leak. A flange that isn't seated or a discharge connection that weeps will drip into a closed cabinet for weeks before anyone notices.

Bring in a plumber when the job is more than a swap. A first-time install counts. So does a trap that has to be rebuilt, and so does a home on septic. If the existing disposal is leaking at the sink flange or the cabinet floor is already wet, start with kitchen sink repair and find the source before anything new gets bolted on.

Should You Repair or Replace a Garbage Disposal?

Try the repair first. If your disposal has stopped working, press the reset button on the bottom of the unit before you look at the cost to replace it. A jam or a tripped reset on a newer unit is a repair job.

If the reset doesn't bring it back, age decides the rest. Most disposals last five to ten years, and some stainless steel models reach 15. If yours is near the end of that range, replacing it will usually save you money in the long run over repeat repair visits. If the sink itself is also due, it's worth knowing what it costs to replace a kitchen sink before you pay for two separate visits.

And if the real complaint is a sink that drains slowly, a new unit won't fix it. You've got a clog further down the line, and it calls for drain cleaning.
