Taking a hot shower only to have it become chilly after a few minutes is understandably frustrating, especially if you live in colder regions. Fortunately, problems with your hot water tank are usually easy to fix, so you'll be back in hot water in no time.
Here is a list of four possible causes of cold water issues in your hot water heater:
The dip tube is in charge of circulating the water in your tank so that the cold water can be heated at the bottom. If the dip tube fails, the cold water is not heated, resulting in less hot and lukewarm water. Another sign of a faulty dip tube is water alternating between lukewarm and cold temperatures while the faucet is turned on.
Solution: Since dip tubes are frequently made of plastic, they are prone to cracking or breaking. The technician will switch off and drain the hot water heater to securely remove the dip tube. If the tube snaps, the heater must be flushed to remove any remaining plastic fragments in the tank before the old tube is replaced with a more robust polyethylene tube.
Electric hot water heaters contain two heating components, one at the bottom and one near the top. The lower element heats the entering cold water, while the upper element keeps the water in the tank at the correct temperature.
When the lower element fails, you will have some hot water, but it will cool faster. If the upper element is faulty, the water will be warm but never as hot as required.
Solution: A technician will first use a multimeter to measure the electrical output of the element to ensure that it is to blame. Replacement is often recommended due to its low cost and only takes a few minutes, so hot water can be restored in no time.
In some instances, hot water heater elements are not burned out but cannot work correctly due to hard water sedimentation. The element will still need to be replaced when this happens, but you may also need to address the hard water issue.
The minerals in your water supply, such as lime and calcium, separate from the water and coat the inside or bottom of your hot water tank, causing sediment buildup. Hard water areas are likely to have more sedimentation buildup.
Sedimentation is also accompanied by increasing loudness from hot water heaters. The bangs and pops coming from the heater are produced by sedimentation cracking and falling from the tank's sides and into the water.
Solution: Sedimentation repairs should be considered general maintenance. The tank will need to be flushed to eliminate the silt. Your service technician will switch off the heater and drain the water. They will then flush the tank with cold water to remove any lingering sedimentation before closing the drain valves again. If you have unusually hard water, you should clean your hot water heater once a year.
A failure in the tank, usually caused by corrosion and sedimentation, is the most severe problem with hot water heaters and will require immediate attention. If you have rust in the water, your tank could be failing, and you need to call a service technician right away.
Tanks can corrode from the inside out through rust or outside due to moisture and debris. Either way, you won't notice any problems unless you have soft water or some sediment in your water.
Solution: In many cases, experts recommend you replace the tank if there is a leak or the wall thickness has become too thin. However, it will be better to replace your tank if it is older than ten years.
Hot water heaters should last for at least ten years if properly maintained. If you take care of them properly by cleaning, flushing, and replacing the dip tube and heating element, you'll be able to prevent sedimentation and corrosion damage.
